The Rainforest Foundation UK (RFUK) works to tackle deforestation around the world, focussing on the human rights of local communities and environmental protection. Having already created campaign materials for RFUK, The New Fat was asked to take on the challenge of designing an activity pack to be used in schools.

Grasping the brief.

RFUK wanted an attractive new product to offer to primary schools, to teach their pupils about life in the rainforest. We knew that it was to be an educational resource aligned with the national curriculum, to support learning at Key Stages 1 and 2. At the same time, it needed to be bright and fun – something that young children would want to engage with and enjoy.

Highly creative artwork.

The New Fat team let their imagination run wild! The result is colourful and vibrant, where stylised illustrations of animals sit alongside photographs depicting life in tropical Africa.

The pack is full of interesting pull-out facts, with an educational glossary, quiz and other activities to get children thinking and learning. We used our artwork to help address tougher issues too, like loss of habit and illegal logging – with suggestions for how children can get involved through awareness and fund-raising.

However, the overriding impression is one of fun. What better way to illustrate the height of a tree than to show a stack of double-decker buses alongside it?!

Help for teachers.

We designed the activity pack to cover 28 pages, ready for printing for the classroom. Alongside it, we also produced a support pack for teachers. This shows how the RFUK resource can be used as part of the curriculum, with lots of practical suggestions for lessons.

Promoting the brand.

The activity and teacher packs were obviously separate products. Nevertheless, we ensured that they have a coherent look, with a consistent colour palette and style to promote the brand and work of RFUK.
